Stonemasonry for Beginners

stonemasonry

Stonemasonry, which is also typically known as stonecraft, has been around for many, many years. Some of the World’s most famous buildings have incredible stonework, such as cathedrals, as well as buildings, sculptures, and structures. Even many famous monuments are built using stonemasonry.

Stonemasonry has been around for so long that we even have a lot of remnants, even in New England. With the many homes in the area, we often see outlines of walls made out of stone. Technically, this is stonemasonry work. While it is older and outdated, it still used the same techniques as we do in the modern day.

Similarly, in medieval times, stonemasons were one of the highest professions you could have. As a result of this, you had to be an apprentice, and you had to do so for seven years. In the modern era, while you still do have to do an apprenticeship, it is only for about three years.

What Are Some Stonemasonry Occupations?

  • Quarrymen: A quarryman is the beginning of the process. Working in the quarries, these men split the rock and shape it into the blocks. This is quite hard labor and can take quite the toll on the human body.
  • Sawyers: The sawyers are the people who cut the massive block down a bit in order to sell to the bunker masons.
  • Bunker Masons: These people are a part of the stonemasonry food chain in that they work the stones into shape so that they are no longer jagged pieces anymore.
  • Carvers: The people, name carvers, are the more artistic of the bunch. What they do is carve the shapen pieces of stone so that they are of the right shape for the project. This can range from flowers to animal shapes to other wildlife and beyond.
  • Fixer Masons: Fixer Masons fix the sculpted stones onto buildings. An example of this would be the angels and even potential famous people that appear on cathedrals all over the world. Similarly, in Prague, they have the most amount of sculptures on buildings, meaning stonemasonry & fixer mason work must have been popular there.
  • Memorial Masons: These masons are the ones that engrave items, and do gravestone work.

What is Brick Masonry?

brick

Brick masonry is masonry work that utilizes bricks. Bricks are the best and most versatile materials that can be used in construction, as they are sturdy and relatively good in terms of insulation. Similarly, by utilizing serpentine brick masonry, you can ensure your walls are very well-built and that they will never collapse in on themselves.

Serpentine brick masonry is when a mason snakes the walls, as opposed to making them in a straight line. By snaking the walls, it allows for better support and structure, meaning that there is a lesser chance of anything happening.

Brick masonry, as a more general term, is the building of a structure in which there are individual materials used in coordination and bound. The binding that is typically used is a material such as mortar, or they can lay naturally in a specific pattern. But what else is there to brick masonry?

There Are Different Kinds Of Brick

Many people think of the bright red, almost glossy brick when they think of a brick wall, and typically imagine it in the form of a veneer, but as mentioned above, bricks are the most versatile material and can be used for different purposes, as well as different looks.

Here are some of the different kinds of bricks used in brick masonry today:

  • Engineering Bricks
  • Concrete Bricks
  • Sand Lime Bricks
  • Common Burnt Clay Bricks

There Are Different Kinds Of Bonds

In regard to bonds, bonds are the way that we bind the bricks in order to keep them together and so that they are of proper support and aesthetic. Let’s take a look at these kinds of bonds and how they look.

Common Bond: A common bond is where every sixth course (another way to say row) is made of header bricks.

English Bond: An English bond is where the courses alternate between all stretchers and all header bricks.

Flemish Bond: A Flemish bond is where every course contains header and stretchers alternating.

How to Repair a Loose Slate Walkway

Loose slate can be the perfect accompaniment to any home, due to its immense amount of durability, as well as lack of necessity in terms of maintenance. Due to this low amount of maintenance, many people see it as a great addition to a home, and they are right! This being said, and while it has an amazing amount of durability, things can happen. While there can be some minor damage to your slate walkway, it is actually not the most difficult fix by any means. Let’s take a look at the steps involved in repairing a loose slate walkway.

Get Together All Necessary Materials

You will need a few different tools in order to properly replace a tile, etc. on your loose slate walkway, including the following:

  1. A Rubber Mallet
  2. Level
  3. Fine Builder’s Sand
  4. Trowel
  5. Shop Broom
  6. Chisel/Knife

Grout Extraction

After the collection of materials, you will then need to get all of that grout out of there. Using a chisel, you will remove the grout from the damaged tile you want to replace. After the grout is removed, you should be able to easily take the tile out of place. Carefully remove this, and you will be able to move onto the next step, but you really need to make sure you are careful because hitting the slate with the chisel can further damage it. Similarly, you will need to remove the tile carefully, as it can crack during the removal process.

Replace Tile

Last, but not least, you can now replace the tile! By leveling off the area with builder’s sand, you will get a surface that is even. From here you will place the tile on top of the leveled sand and then press in with a rubber mallet. After it is firmly in place, just sweep the area and you are good to go.

How To Protect Your Walkway This Winter

icy steps

Walkways can become some of the most dangerous areas during the winter months. Snow and rain are the main contributors to this danger. After snowfall and rainfall, these elements typically freeze where they land, causing ice to cover walkway areas, driveways, and stairs. It is very easy to fall, and sometimes with black ice, you don’t even see this coming, which is the biggest danger of all. Let’s take a look at some of the preventative measures you can take to protect not only your walkways but yourself as well.

Keep It Clean

While ice is dangerous, there are some other elements that can contribute to the slipperiness of your walkway, including natural growth, which will need to be removed as soon as possible. Things such as moss and even leaves form the fall season can soak up the water from the snow and rain and cause a lot of issues further down the road.

Ice Removal

Ice removal is a necessity in the wintertime, especially in New England. There are a few different ways to achieve this. The first is to chip away using an ice chipper, where you will want to start on the outside and work your way in. This is because the ice is thinner at its edges. If this fails, however, boiled water can be poured onto the ice to melt it. One thing to note is that this water will have to be cleaned up immediately with a rag (you will want to wear thick gloves) because it can refreeze and cause more ice to form.

Salt

Salt is another way to melt this ice on your walkway. It is extremely useful, especially right after a snowfall, and can lower the freezing point of the ice to that it melts anywhere above 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sand

If it is too cold for salt to work on your walkway, a good alternative could be sand. Sand provides an abrasive surface which gives tractions and allows for fewer falls. Some alternatives to sand that work in the same way are kitty litter, sawdust, and wood ashes.

What Are My Walkways Options?

It can be a bit daunting to choose a specific material to use on your walkway, as there are so many options. We also understand that the walkway is one of the first things that a person sees when they first see a home. Putting in a new walkway can work in favor of increased curb appeal. It can also make a good first impression on any home visitors. We hope to provide you with a bit of a guide regarding all of the different kinds of materials.

Clay Brick Pavers

There are very popular, especially in the New England area. This is because they are typically used on historical homes and districts. With their age and elegance, they often add a classic flair to a home that wasn’t there before. They typically come in red, orange, and brown colors and provide a pop of color in contrast to the green of a lawn. While this material is beautiful, it is also very easier to maintain in that it is durable, flexible, less sensitive to cracking and repairs are easy. Similarly, this material is very much a DIYer’s dream come true.

Gravel

Easy to lay and inexpensive, this is a dream come true. You also have a few options with gravel, as you have the ability to choose between smaller or larger stones. The smaller stones are really beneficial in that they provide a better surface area coverage when pressed down. Similarly, larger stones look great but require a bit more attention in regards to measurements.

Natural Stone

This material is very beautiful, arguably the most beautiful, as it allows the owners to create a completely unique look. While each stone is unique in color, design, and shape, it is also durable and withstands extreme temperature changes (perfect for New England). The only downfall to this material is that natural stone does chip a bit. With some irrigation overspray, you should be good to go.

Poured Concrete

While it is a very popular material, it is also extremely easy to install, especially if you are already pouring concrete in another area of a home, such as into a patio area. Alongside this, it is also very kid friendly, which is always a plus!

Interlocking Concrete Pavers

As one of the more practical and attractive materials, it is also luckily one of the more inexpensive of the crowd. It acts as an easy DIY project, where the repairs, later on, are significantly less complicated.

How to Keep a Stone Wall in Pristine Condition

stone wall

Stone walls are incredible, in that they can last well over 100 years. They used to be used as boundaries, especially for farmers, who had a lot of land. This land had a lot of ambiguity if it was not lined with something such as a stone wall. Nowadays, people tend to use stone walls as an aesthetic feature in a home, where they act as a beauty enhancer, as well as an additional element that lends its curb appeal to a home. The masonry involved with a project such as this can be complicated, because they are built to last many decades, but with the right help, as well as the correct maintenance, these can last a very long time. Here are some ways to keep that stone wall looking great for a long time.

  • Replace Stone: If there is a stone missing, or one that has fallen out of place it is important to replace this stone. While it will not have any immediate effects, this is important for long term reasons. These reasons being that the structure can collapse over time, or if it is a wall, it can fall. Avoiding this will help keep the integrity of the structure intact.
  • Keep them Clean: It is important to ensure that you keep your stone wall clean for it to continue looking great. If there is any growth on the stones, cleaning them is essential and will stop this growth from continuing. Alongside this, invasive vines, brush and saplings are important to remove.
  • Remove Trees: While there are typically not many trees in the way of your stone wall structure, you will want to remove any that do exist, and remove any saplings that seem to get in the way. When you do remove these, you will need to cut it at the stump, and not remove them by the roots. The reason for this is that the roots can pull up from under the stone wall and make it fall over. Roots of trees can grow out very far from the actual area the tree covers on the ground.
